How Should Values Education Be?

Values are about what is “right” and what is “wrong” within this framework, which is guiding human life, having different importance levels, representing abstract, objectivity, subjective beliefs based on emotion, desired, not specific to a particular situation and spreading to all situations. It relates to goals that are indicators of individual norms and attitudes and which people want to achieve.

There are different 'values education' programs in the world and in our country, which are included in the education life and included in the curriculum at an early age. In our country, two core values education programs integrated into education attract attention. One of them is "character education" and the other is "living values". Living values program is approved and supported by MEB in our country.

What is 'value' as a concept?

The assumptions of values education can be summarized as follows: The formation of a moral personality in man occurs in a certain period and a certain period.

The role of the environment, which gave it examples of behavior at that time, was quite large. “The place that gives people its moral personality is its immediate surroundings.

So, within the assumptions outlined above, depending on the development of children, which value should be the basis for the programs at which age can be internalized by the child.

In order for children to attain basic values, their immediate surroundings, namely school and family, are important.

Of course, it should not be forgotten that the acquisition of human and conscientious values cannot be realized only in school, the home-family environment and especially the values adopted by the parents and the attitudes and behaviors displayed in line with these values are the main determinants and shapers in the context of children's personality development and values.
